Terminology

Terminology - a set of terms in a particular field; a specialized nomenclature (dictionary definition of foreign words).

From the point of view of the scope of the ÚNMZ, it is a set of linguistic (Czech, English, French and German) equivalents of terms that appear in EC technical regulations.

For better orientation and search possibilities for translators and the professional public, a new terminology database has been created within the ÚNMZ Database (NDB), including language equivalents (English, French and German) that correspond to Czech terms used in EC legal and technical regulations published in the Official Journal of the EU.

The NDB was created from the content of the dictionary series "Terminology of technical harmonisation" created in the period before the Czech Republic's accession to the EU, when EC law was being translated into the Czech language and it was necessary to unify the terms used in various sector-specific regulations. Czech equivalents to foreign language terms in EC technical regulations are the result of the activities of professional translators, subject matter experts, consultants, opposition procedures and revisions at the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Coordination and Revision Centre at the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic and, last but not least, Czech experts in the relevant EU translation units (at the Commission of the European Communities and the Council of the EU).

The NDB is continuously updated with new technical terms as further technical regulations are adopted at EC level.

The monitoring of terminology and its processing in the form of a publicly accessible NDB database aims to facilitate the work of translators and the professional public and to unify, as far as possible, the terms used in EC regulations with the terms introduced into national regulations of the Czech Republic and, where appropriate, standards.
