This year, for the first time, the World Metrology Day is based on the resolution of the UNESCO General Conference declaring 20 May as World Metrology Day.

This decision opens new avenues for the promotion of metrology in line with UNESCO's mission to build a better world through science and education.

Metrology provides the basis for data-driven decision-making and policy development in the area of sustainability. By providing accurate measurements across different aspects of sustainability, it helps organisations, governments and individuals make informed decisions that contribute to a more sustainable future.

World Metrology Day 2024 focuses on the many measurement opportunities that contribute to a sustainable global economy and environment.

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signing of the Metric Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen countries. The Convention established a framework for global cooperation in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original goal of the Metric Convention - worldwide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

The World Metrology Day is the subject of an article in the 2/2024 issue of Metrology (https://www.unmz.cz/metrologie/casopis-metrologie/).
